Joanne Carnell
Head of Communications, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust

I provide proofreading and light editing for charities and small organisations, helping you prepare clear, polished content for publication, distribution, or formal submission.

What I work on

Whether you’re producing a report, communicating with members, updating your website or responding to a consultation, I’ll help ensure your writing is clear, consistent and ready to represent your organisation with confidence.

Below are the types of content you might need help with and with which I am most experienced. If your content doesn’t quite fit in any of these categories, please do get in touch anyway, as I might still be able to help.

Member communications

Polished, engaging communication for your members and supporters

Whether it’s a member magazine, newsletter or welcome pack, these materials are key to building relationships with your audience. I help ensure your content is clear, engaging and consistent in tone.

Annual reports

Clear, consistent reporting of your organisation’s work and impact

Annual reports often bring together impact summaries, forward strategy and financial information. I help ensure the final document is clear, consistent and professionally presented.

Website copy

Clear, accessible content for your website and digital platforms

Website and blog content needs to be easy to navigate and read. I proofread for clarity, consistency and flow, helping your content work effectively for your audience in an online context.

Formal communications & submissions

Carefully presented submissions where clarity and precision matter

Editing and proofreading documents intended for local authorities or other official bodies, helping your message come across clearly and effectively.

How it works

I aim to keep things simple, flexible and easy to fit around your existing processes.

1. Send your document
Get in touch with your document (or a draft/sample), along with any background information, deadlines and specific requirements. We’ll agree the scope of the work, discuss the price, and suitable start/finish dates.

Note: There’s no obligation at the enquiry stage – I’m always happy to take a look and discuss options.

2. Editing and proofreading
I’ll review your document for clarity, consistency and correctness. This includes spelling, grammar and punctuation, as well as formatting and, where appropriate, light stylistic improvements.

Where a document would benefit from it, I may suggest small changes to improve readability, flow and overall clarity – while keeping your tone and intended meaning intact.

3. Feedback and markup

  • For Word documents, I use Track Changes and comments
  • For PDFs, I use Adobe markup tools

If your document isn’t heavily dependent on layout, it’s usually best to send a Word file. Working in Word is quicker and more flexible, which in turn keeps costs down.

PDFs are useful where the layout is important and needs to stay fixed (for example, a designed publication or magazine), but they are more time-consuming to work with, so editing tends to be slower and more involved.

If you’re unsure which format is best, or would prefer an alternative, just let me know and we’ll agree on an approach that suits your project.

4. Finalisation
You review the document and implement any changes you wish to keep. If needed, I’m happy to clarify queries or respond to feedback.

Luca is an absolute pleasure to work with. He is efficient, quick, and exceptionally thorough in his proofreading. We regularly provide him with complex and detailed materials, and he consistently delivers accurate, high-quality work within tight timescales. His keen eye for detail, professionalism, and commitment to excellence give us complete confidence in everything he reviews.

What does it cost?

Every project is different, so I take a tailored approach to pricing.

Rather than using fixed per-word or per-page rates, I base my quotes on the time a piece of work is likely to take. This depends on factors such as length, format, and how much editing the document needs.

As a guide, I work to a day rate of £270, broadly in line with the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading’s recommended minimum rates. Most projects are quoted in half-day or quarter-day increments. Usually this is provided as a fixed quote in advance, though where the scope of the work is less certain, we might agree to a different model.

Due to the admin cost of any project, a minimum charge of £50 applies. However, for small but frequent projects – for example, regular blog or social media posts – I can do the work as it comes, track my time, and invoice as one at agreed intervals.

I offer a modest discount for registered charities that become regular clients.

If you’re unsure what your project might cost, feel free to send over a document or sample. I’m always happy to take a look and advise.
